The Elite allergen reduction filter's fibers attract air-polluting contaminants (view larger).
By removing dust from the air, the filter also reduces strain on your furnace and air conditioner, helping to keep them running efficiently (view larger).Electrostatic Design Captures More Particles
The 3M Elite allergen reduction filter is made with both positively charged and negatively charged fibers that act like tiny magnets to attract air-polluting contaminants. Since particles in the air are either positively or negatively charged, they are attracted to and captured by the filter and kept out of your living space.

Electrostatic filters, including the 3M Elite allergen reduction filter, perform better than comparable non-electrostatic fiberglass and washable/reusable filters, because they attract and capture the small, allergy-aggravating microparticles that non-electrostatic filters can't.

Improves Indoor Air Quality
With indoor air a surprising two to five times more polluted than outdoor air, the 3M Elite allergen reduction filter can make a difference in maintaining a healthier home environment by cleaning air with each pass through the filter.

The 3M Elite allergen reduction filter features a 2200 Microparticle Performance Rating (MPR), which means it is able to capture large and small particles from the air, including household dust, pollen, dust-mite debris, mold spores, pet dander, smoke, smog, bacteria, particles that can carry viruses, and particles that carry odors. This high-performance filter meets the American Lung Association of the Upper Midwest Health House Program's indoor air quality guidelines.

Improves Efficiency
This high-performance allergen-reduction filter also keeps your heating and air conditioning equipment working efficiently by removing dirt and reducing strain on the motor. It is recommended that you change the filter every three months. However, the effectiveness and life of the filter can vary and depend on the individual conditions in your home.

3M EA03DC-6 Review by Brandon Bianchi "Brandon" (Salinas, CA)

While these may be a little pricey, buying in bulk does have a savings.

I have been using lower grade filters for a few years now and only discovered these online while looking for them. I must say the thicker element doesn't seem to have any impact on the airflow to my heater, and its amazing how much more it visibly picks up.

I wasn't a believer at first but after going through a few of these and seeing what they catch plus breathing the air I can say for certain its worth every penny.

This seems to have helped my families allergies.

I purchased these because we live in Austin - one of the Allergy capitals of the World. They don't last as long as other filters (I used to change mine about every 4-6 months) - these last about 2 months. Not that they are bad, but they do catch a lot more dust and particles - which causes them to need replacing more often. My first one actually got so clogged that it reduced the air-flow enough to make me think my AC compressor went out. My only gripe about buying a case of these filters is that the shipper slapped a mailing label on the box and shipped it out. The material for the box of filters was designed to be a display case in a retail environment, not for shipping across the country. When mine arrived, it looked like it was on the bottom of the pile - 3 of the filters were visibly bent in. They are still functional, but don't fit as well in the return air duct once they've been creased.

First, I have to say that it is hard for me to rate an air filter. No one in my household has any allergies, nor have we any source of air pollution that requires thorough filtering.

I got this filter mostly for peace of mind, replacing the most basic filter put in by the builder of our unit. I have a little story about the filter, which may confirm its efficiency. The filter is supposed to last for about 3 months of normal use. So, I replaced the old filter that came with my house and has been sitting in the blower for about 9 months (do I blush here?). After about 2 months after the filter was put in (which was Jan), my heating system which uses a heat pump started having trouble keeping up with the thermostat setting. It would stay about 2 degrees behind, and would have to kick on the auxiliary heater (which comes on when the difference between the thermostat and the actual temperature falls below 2 degrees). I was getting worried that the heat pump is leaking or something of that sort. I got the builder to send the heat pump man to inspect our unit since it was still on warranty. It turns out that the first of the new filters basically got clogged after 2 months. Being as inexperienced in home maintenance as I was, I was not able to diagnose it, but now I know that one amateurish but effective way to test the filter is to simply check how hard it is to be lifted out of position when the blower is on. Indeed, as the heat pump man demonstrated to me, the filter was really hard to lift indicating that the blower was not able to move the air efficiently. I just swapped in a new filter, and things went back to normal. Since then, the filters last for more than the 3 months specified in instructions. I think that there was still quite some dust left in my house from construction, and the new filter caught it clogging up quickly. Based on this, I think I could say that I have at least some small "proof" to the efficiency of the filter.

In general, I would recommend this filter. It seems to work well, and it certainly gives you peace of mind. You can probably safely use it for more than 3 months recommended in the instructions. I am going out on the limb here, but it seems to me that the filter does not let anything more through as you use it. My story seems to suggest that it simply gets more and more stuck, obstructing air flow. When your filter approaches its time limit, simply check how hard is it to move when the blower is on. If the force required is pretty much the same as when you put it in, then you can probably get some more life out of it. Of course, the "lift it up" measurement is very imprecise, and you may be incurring higher energy costs from your blower having to work harder. :)
